Keeping Carpets Clean: Stanley Steemer Giveaway

by Tiff on May 6, 2012

Keeping floors cleaned is a tough job. We have a house with carpet, and 4 kids. You see the scenario? Even with my very strict rules about eating at the table, and my watchful eye to always catch a spill asap, it seems little little marks pop up often.

Here is how I try my carpets looking fresh and clean:
1. No eating in the living room rule
2. Vacuum daily
3. No shoes in the house
4. Spot clean as soon as I catch something
5. No walking around with sippy cups. These still spill little dots of drips.
6. Steam clean 2 times a year. When all else fails, call the experts!

Being in the military, and moving often, we have to keep our floors spotless. See, we live in base housing. There are strict rules and strict inspections when you move out. You must show receipt that you had your carpets professionally cleaned, and if there are any stains, you will be charged for replacing the carpet. (Actually, they can deduct it out of your next payday!)

This year the pollen numbers have been outrageous. Did you know that gets into your carpets? Yep, you track everything in from outside. Sneezy lately? Your allergies could be due to your carpets.

To help out, I have a $100 Stanley Steemer gift card to give to 1 lucky reader!

Did you know that Stanley Steemer does more than just carpet? Stanley Steemer’s expertise extends to hardwood, tile, air ducts, water damage restoration, and more!

My favorite cleaning money-saver is definitely vinegar! I use it for everything–cleaning my countertops, cleaning mirrors, fabric softener (it even keeps line-dried clothes fluffy, and bonus–it keeps your darks from fading!), fruit and vegetable wash, deodorizer, quick carpet and floor cleanups…you name it! I even use it (diluted with water) to make sure my hair is rinsed well in the shower because I have hard water. And speaking of hard water, it’s pretty great for unclogging shower heads and removing hard water deposits, too.

I always keep a spray bottle full and a gallon or two on hand. I like it not only because it’s inexpensive and very multi-purpose, but it’s also environmentally friendly and non-toxic (which makes it great to use if you have pets or kids).

I use vinegar a lot. You can use it in so many different ways. I also use a steam mop. It has reusable mop heads, and has already paid for itself. Plus, I love that I don’t have to use harsh chemicals on my floor. Oh, and no mop bucket is pretty convenient, too. I also make my own air freshener. My husband has asthma, and we all have bad allergies. It’s cheaper, better for the environment, and doesn’t aggravate any of our allergies.

I have been a slave to the carpets because of these rules in government housing. I really rather would rather wood floors. I would love to buy a house but we are not ready yet. I have three boys all less than two years apart. With that being said – I am currently loosing the battle…this would really help. My favorite cleaning tool is baking soda and with grease for over night jobs Ammonia.
